Tulika Nair
Growing up, we hear stories about the good and the evil side, the gods and demons. Names of gods are inscribed in our memories, demon names though can be a little more difficult to place. In this post, we give you a list that will make you more familiar with the demons of mythological fame.
There is no child who has not grown up hearing stories about the demon who resides under their bed, ready to scare them if they are not on their best behavior all the time. Then there are those stories that your grandparents tell you, which always has a hero and a villain, a god and a demon, who fight it out for ultimate power over the world.
A demon is a supernatural being, a creation that is not human. While today demons have a negative meaning attached to them, it was not always so. Many of the names that you come across will have extremely angelic connotations to them. The word daimon from which demon is taken originally translates to mean a spirit or a being that is spiritual in nature.
Somewhere along the line, demons came to represent unclean and dirty beings. This was true for almost every major faith and belief in the world, from eastern religions to Christian beliefs. It was believed that if a human being was possessed by a demonic spirit, then it was important for the person to be exorcised in some way of the other.
In many ways demons became associated with paganism as a spirit that could be controlled by evil beings and made to do their bidding. Even today demonology holds an important position in mythological studies.
The presence of demons fosters the greatness of Gods. In this article, we try to give you a list of male and female names for demons that abound in the pages of religious history.
